An Alberta family physician has been charged with child exploitation offences and Victoria police played a key role in his arrest.

The investigation against 62-year-old Fred Janke started in October 2017 in a joint investigation by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s (ALERT) Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit and Victoria police.

Victoria’s ICE unit informed ALERT’S ICE team after conducting an online investigation of a website known to host online chat rooms geared towards child sex and determined the suspect to be from Alberta.

Janke allegedly was involved in sexually explicit conversations with a person he met online.

Janke is accused of attempting to arrange for sex with the person’s five-year-old daughter, but the person Janke was actually speaking to was a Victoria police undercover operator and the young girl did not exist.

Edmonton police arrested Janke Thursday and charged him with making arrangements to commit sexual offences against a child, making child pornography, and distribution of child pornography.

Police say Janke was based in Sylvan Lake, AB, and had been a practicing physician for nearly 30 years.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact police.
