The Victoria Police Department arrested a man at gunpoint on Monday afternoon after receiving a report that the suspect had brandished a weapon and attempted to stab a pedestrian.

The incident took place near the intersection of Blanshard Street and Hill Street at approximately 1 p.m. in the afternoon on Monday, May 9.

Police say they received a report from the victim — who outlined that he did not know the man — suggesting that the suspect had approached him, threatened him and brandished a weapon.

The caller followed the man at a distance after the incident while on the phone with police, relaying the suspect’s location to the E-Comm 911 call taker.

Patrol officers arrived at his location, located the victim and the suspect, and proceed to make an arrest at gunpoint.

During the arrest, police found a multi-tool located on the suspect as part of an evidence search.

VicPD says that officers recognized the suspect, who had been arrested and released earlier in the day for breaching court-ordered conditions not to possess knives.

The suspect faces recommended charges for assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breaching conditions. He was held for morning court.
