The Victoria Grizzlies opened main camp at Juan de Fuca arena Monday afternoon and go into the 2017-18 season as reigning BCHL Island Division champs.

It may feel like summer is a long way from being over, but junior hockey players are starting to hit the ice in preparation for the 2017-18 season.

This afternoon at the Juan de Fuca arena, the Victoria Grizzlies opened their main training camp.

44 players are in camp and broken into two different groups, Teams Bozak and Benn, with nightly scrimmages at 8 p.m. tonight and tomorrow, and then at 7 p.m.Wednesday.

The Grizzlies are looking to build off a tremendous regular season last year, winning the Island division with 83 points, and being one of the final four teams in the playoffs.

Despite key losses, expectations remain high for the new year.

“I know the group led, by our Captain Lucas Clark, they want to make it farther than that, and obviously a league championship,” Grizzlies Head Coach and General Manager Craig Didmon said.

“So it’s day one, we’ve got a long way to go, however, we do got a lot of experience that played a lot of playoff games last year. And we want to, you know, start off where we took off last year and big expectations, for sure.”

The Grizzlies will face off with the Cowichan Valley Capitals in their first pre-season game Thursday.
