A man has been arrested following a suspicious fire in Vic West that caused $400,000 in damage on Saturday.

According to the Victoria Police Department, officers arrested a man at a multi-unit temporary housing facility for arson following a dumpster fire on Mary Street in Vic West.

The Victoria Fire Department says crews responded to Mary Street at around 6 p.m. after someone reported that a dumpster had been set on fire.

Eventually, the fire spread to an adjacent structure, causing an estimated $400,000 in damage to the exterior roof and siding, as well as interior walls and ceiling joists, the release notes.

Fortunately, crews were able to extinguish the blaze and no one was hurt.

The accused person has been evicted from the shelter, which is operated by the Our Place Society, and won’t be allowed back inside because of the fire, the society confirmed with CHEK News on Monday.
