Two fires sparked within an hour of each other early Sunday morning are under investigation by the Victoria Fire Department.

Officials say they first responded to the Thrifty Foods on the 400 block of Simcoe Street around 1:11 a.m. for a clothing donation bin that was emitting smoke.

They were able to extinguish the fire, but less than one hour later they responded to the 500 block of Fort Street after a building fire alarm was activated. They arrived to a garbage fire and were able to also extinguish it.

“If there starts to be a rash of them suddenly they become suspicious, I don’t know if two a rash yet but it definitely keeps us aware, ” said Victoria fire Battalion Chief Brian Elvedahl.

The incidents have been handed over to the fire prevention division for investigation. Anyone with information regarding the fires is asked to contact the Victoria Fire Department.
