The days of seeing horse-drawn carriages on Victoria’s street may be numbered if one Victoria city councillor gets his wish.

Ben Isitt is asking city staff to provide information on the potential implications should council move to phase out the carriages by 2023.

He would also like to see if they could be replaced by electric-powered vehicles for hire or e-carriages.

Isitt wants to see council encourage “collaboration between industry and the City to explore the feasibility of “e-carriages” to provide ongoing opportunities for tourism, employment and economic development.”

Called “Transitioning from Commercial Horse-Drawn Carriage Operations to E-Carriages”, Isitt writes that the phasing out period would provide adequate notice to operators, employees and members of the public.

Council will consider the motion at a Committee of the Whole meeting on Thursday morning.
