Victoria city council has voted in favour of increasing funding for Canada Day policing costs.

Victoria city council voted Thursday to provide more money for next year’s Canada Day celebrations and keep the scope of the event the same.

The council had the option of spending $107,000 for police funding at the Canada Day celebrations or scaling back the event. All councillors except Coun. Ben Isitt voted in favour of spending the money and keeping the event the same as the past years.

Victoria council also gave the green light to a motion to support artists with affordable housing during the committee of the whole meeting on Thursday.

Loveday did not provide many details but the motion would see staff ensure specific artist housing was included as part of the city’s overall housing strategy.

Coun. Geoff Young was the only councillor opposed to the plan.

Both decisions need to be ratified at a council meeting on Thursday night.
