The Victoria Police Department is looking for witnesses and more information after a Canada Day display was defaced.

VicPD said in a press release that on July 4 officers attended a home in the 100-block of Joseph Street in the Fairfield neighbourhood following reports that a Canada Day display had been vandalized with spray paint.

“Anti-Canadian messages were painted on various items, resulting in damage to the residence and property,” the release said.

Jim Pungente, a homeowner in Fairfield told CHEK on July 4 that 15 of his 18 flags were recently defaced with messages such as “You are on native land” and “K-K-K-anada” were spray-painted onto the flags. He also said that his home was not the only one that was vandalized.

VicPD would not say whether the incident they are investigating occurred at Pungente’s home, only that it remains investigation and are now asking witnesses and anyone with video footage to contact them at 250-995-7654, ext 1.
