Victoria police are investigating after an altercation between a driver and a cyclist escalated to the point where the driver hit the cyclist with their car.

Police say the incident began around 5 p.m. on March 17 near the intersection of Government Street and Belleville Street.

While there, the cyclist told police that a black SUV was next to them and the driver opened their window and spat on them.

The pair then found themselves side by side again at the intersection of Douglas and Belleville streets, at which point the cyclist tried to “confront the driver,” according to VicPD.

When the cyclist did so, the driver hit the cyclist with their car, causing the cyclist to fall off their bike.

BC Emergency Health Services were called to the scene to assess the cyclist, police say.

Investigators are now trying to track down the vehicle and driver, and are asking any witnesses of the incident to come forward.

The vehicle is described as a black SUV that is a 2010 to 2014 model, possibly a Nissan or Saturn, with a B.C. Parks licence plate. It also had pre-existing damage to the driver’s side door.

Anyone with information on the incident or the driver is asked to call Victoria police at E-Comm Report Desk at 250-995-7654 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
