VicPD said the man was running in and out of traffic Friday morning

Victoria police are looking for witnesses and more information after an attempted carjacking in downtown Victoria Friday morning.

Police say officers were called to the intersection of Douglas and View streets after receiving a report of a shirtless man running in and out of traffic. They later learned the man was attempting to pull a woman out of her car while she was stopped at the intersection in a carjacking attempt.

The man entered through the driver’s side window and tried to force the woman out of the car, according to police. The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say bystanders intervened and the man fled the scene. One of the bystanders said they followed the man and gave officers a description of him and his location.

Officers say they located and arrested the man in the 700-block of Pandora Avenue without incident. They also say he was arrested for assault and breach of probation from a separate incident.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for medical treatment because of drug intoxication, according to police. He will be released into police custody and held for court.

VicPD says if anyone was a witness to the incident or has information to call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1 or to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
