Victoria Police have arrested a man following an alleged assault and criminal barricade at a residential building in Esquimalt.

Victoria police have arrested a man following an alleged assault and criminal barricade at a residential building in Esquimalt.

According to a police report issued on Thursday, patrol officers were called to a multi-unit building in the 1000-block of Esquimalt Rd. just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday night, Sept. 30.

Police said they received reports that someone had been assaulted.

Upon arriving on the scene in Esquimalt, officers located the victim of the alleged assault, who was said to be suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. The victim was treated on the scene and then transported to the hospital by BC Emergency Health Services paramedics.

The police report says that after locating the victim, officers learned that the suspect was in a unit inside the residence. Victoria police moved to arrest him, but the suspect refused to leave the unit and barricaded himself inside, according to the report.

The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team along with their Crisis Negotiators responded, as well as additional officers, including VicPD K9.

Police said the incident lasted around three hours, successfully negotiating with the man to come out just before 10 p.m.

He was taken into custody and held for morning court, police said.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
