Though students were supposed to be moving back into Vic High next month, the school district says that is being delayed one more month.
A letter by the principal of Vic High School says the structural reinforcement and construction of new buildings is almost complete, but interior work has been delayed.
“Unfortunately, the completion of some of the interior work has been delayed, specifically the electrical and flooring scope,” the letter by Aaron Parker says. “Although this work is nearing completion, following recent occupancy reviews, it was decided that the school could not be safely occupied by students and staff while this remaining interior work was completed.”
Now instead of moving back in next month, students are expected to be able to return to Vic High in March.
In the meantime, students will continue to attend the S.J. Willis swing site and bus to Fairey Technical Wing for shop classes.
The specific move-in date will be provided when the project gets nearer to completion.
Vic High has been undergoing renovations and upgrades since 2020. The provincial government has contributed $77.1 million for seismic improvements, a 200-seat expansion and preservation of the landmark. The school district is paying $2.6 million.
It was previously recommended to demolish the school that was deemed seismically unsafe, and to build a new building. Following public outcry, the district instead recommended the more expensive option of doing seismic upgrades and building extensions on the school.
