More than 3,000 people south of Naniamo are without power Wednesday afternoon and a vehicle collision is to blame, according to BC Hydro.
The hydro company says 3,228 residents living in the South Wellington and Cedar areas, as well as to the east on Gabriola Island, lost power around 3:45 p.m.
A CHEK News reporter near the scene says a truck pulling an excavator at Morden Road and the Trans Canada Highway hit hydro lines, pulling them down and cutting the power for thousands.
Police and fire crews are reportedly on scene, and drivers in the area may experience road detours.
BC Hydro says crews will be working to restore the power.
