The City of Parksville says thirty trees were vandalized over the weekend in the Cedar Ridge Estates area.

According to the city, the vandalism occurred along a pathway. Ten trees were girdled or destroyed at the base of the three and another 20 trees were significantly topped.

The fir and pine trees were planted during the first phase development of the area. The three were about eight to 11 metres (25 to 35 feet) tall.

RCMP and city staff were at the site Tuesday morning and estimate the damage to be a minimum of $30,000. All the trees are being removed.

“The vandalism was intended to permanently destroy the trees and would have taken considerable sustained effort by individuals to inflict this amount of damage,” the city said in a statement.

“This targeted and senseless damage is unacceptable to the city.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Oceanside RCMP at 250-248-6111.
