Vancouver Island’s Sheringham Distillery has won Best Contemporary Gin at the 2019 World Gin Awards.

The winners including Shirley-based Sheringham were announced at a gala on Thursday night in London, UK

Its Seaside gin beat out competition from 23 countries including Britain and the United States.

The awards bills itself as a global event selecting the very best in internationally recognized styles of gin, including Classic, London Dry and Genever.

Sheringham won for Best Contemporary Gin, described as “Gins with flavour profiles where juniper is still discernible, but other flavours such as citrus, spice and floral notes are more prominent than in a traditional gin.”

The craft distillery was established in 2015.

“Sheringham Distillery is an homage to the name given to the area in 1846. In 1893, after the first post office was built, Sheringham was shortened to Shirley so the name would fit on the postage stamp.”
