Moviegoers on Vancouver Island and beyond will be able to sit back and enjoy a flick on the big screen at a fraction of the cost this weekend.

More than 3,000 movie theatres across North America will offer $3 tickets (plus applicable taxes) to mark National Cinema Day this Saturday, Sept. 3, as the industry bounces back from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both Cineplex Entertainment and Landmark Cinemas will offer the deal at all locations and for all movies, showtimes and formats, such as IMAX and UltraAVX.

Cineplex operates four locations on the Island, including Cineplex Odeon Victoria Cinemas, SilverCity Victoria Cinemas, Cineplex Odeon Westshore Cinemas, and Galaxy Cinemas Nanaimo.

Landmark Cinemas, meanwhile, can be found in Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Courtenay, and Campbell River.

Many local independent theatres across Canada are also participating in the one-day event, including Caprice Twin Theatres in Duncan, according to the Movie Theatre Association of Canada (MTAC).

“Movie-going is back and it is great to see our industry coming together and rallying behind National Cinema Day,” said Nuria Bronfman, executive director, MTAC, in a news release.

Bronfman’s comments come as Cineplex saw its strongest quarter in over two years, thanks to box-office blockbusters and record-breaking results. In fact, the company’s second-quarter revenue was up to $349.9 million in 2022 from $64.9 million the year prior.

“Nothing matches watching movies together with friends and family at a theatre,” she added.

“We are excited to join our colleagues in the US in thanking movie lovers across the country for their support and celebrating great movies and the thrill of the big screen experience.”
