For local artist Tanya Bub, the world of eco-art is the perfect medium.
“I think the passion I have is making something that is not alive look alive,” says Bub.
Known for her life-like creations, Bub was recently inspired to create an exhibit featuring one of her favourite animals: dogs.
“I sometimes make commission sculptures of dogs for people and I take them to the beach to photograph,” she says.
“I noticed that some dogs will have a really powerful response to the pieces, so I thought, well maybe I’ll do an art show for dogs.”
Art for Dogs will feature a variety of different works, from life-sized Great Danes to tiny table-sized creations, with 25 per cent of the proceeds going to the BC SPCA.
“Having champions for animal fundraisers once again in our fold is a huge boost to the critical funds that we need to raise for the vulnerable animals in our care,” says Victoria SPCA senior manager Breanne Beckett.
“So when Tanya first reached out about a month ago with this idea for a fantastic art show, and we’re so grateful to be a part of it.”
There will also be two pieces featuring two real life dogs: Troy, a nine-year-old Husky and Thorton, a six-year-old American Foxhound.
“I thought what if I do a sculpture, a portrait, of these dogs and then people will be able to see how cute they are and how charming they are,” says Bub.
It’s an event Bub and the SPCA hopes brings awareness to rescue animals and appreciation for dogs.
“I hope people take away a feeling of appreciation for animals, I hope they take away a piece because I am raising money for the SPCA and an appreciation for art as well,” says Bub.
Art for Dogs runs from May 10-29 at the Gage Gallery, with the official opening slated for May 12.
