The UVic Vikes are all smiles after winning the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship Sunday.

The UVic Vikes are the Canadian University Men’s Rugby Champions after narrowly defeating their rivals, the UBC Thunderbirds, in a dramatic final match.

The Thunderbirds started the match off strong gaining a 12-0 lead and dominating most of the first half.

But in the remaining seven minutes of the half Vikes captain James O’Neill scored two tries with conversions and the match was quickly tied at 12-12. Jenner Teufel put a penalty between the goalposts to end the half at 14-12 Vikes.

A drop goal and a penalty in the second half put UBC back in the lead at 15-14.

The Vikes picked up the lead again with a try at seven minutes remaining in the match, with the score 21-15 Vikes.

But there was still plenty of tension to come when UBC scored a try in the right corner with no time remaining on the clock.

UBC then had a difficult corner convert for the win, but the attempt sailed wide left, resulting in the Vikes hanging on for the 21-20 victory.
