A seagull was rescued from Beacon Hill Park by firefighters Sunday morning.

The Victoria Fire Department rescued a juvenile seagull on Sunday morning that was caught in some netting in Beacon Hill Park.

Platoon Captain Allan Griffin says that firefighters were notified at 9:29 a.m. by Wild ARC volunteers about the distressed seagull.

Firefighters found the bird trapped in some netting beside the Beacon Hill Park’s lawn bowling ring.

“The bird was about 20 ft. off the ground, its wing was fully trapped,” said Griffin. “It would have died there. Which is why we made the decision to cut it down.”

Griffin says that firefighter Kaj Fulton had to get creative during the rescue.

Because of some obstructing hedges, Fulton had to improvise a tool by duct taping a knife to the end of a utility pole in order to cut the gull down.

Firefighters brought the gull back to their fire hall where Wild ARC volunteers retrieved the bird.

The seagull is now in Wild ARC’s care. Representatives from Wild ARC say that the gull is still quite stressed and will need some time to calm down before they can conduct a full examination.
