Members of a union representing 450 University of Victoria sessional lecturers and music instructors are threatening to strike if progress isn’t made at the bargaining table.

In a release, members of CUPE 4163 Component Three, which represents continuing, sessional and music performance instructors, voted 92 per cent in favour of job action.

The group teaches 30 per cent of all University of Victoria students.

The union says no action is planned yet, but they will go on strike “if it turns out to be the only way to get the administration to listen.”

Members say they are frustrated with low pay and precarious working conditions.

The two sides are set to meet at the bargaining table again next week and have been in discussions for five months.

If job action occurs, it would be the first in the local’s 20-year history.
