UVic has been named in the “Canada’s Best Diversity Employers 2018” competition.

Put on by Mediacorp Canada, it recognizes employers across the country with exceptional workplace diversity and inclusiveness programs.

Some of UVic’s work contributing to the recognition is:

  • the establishment of a chair in Transgender studies
  • a commitment to preserving the history of pioneering activists, community leaders and researchers who have contributed to the betterment of transgender people.
  • the university’s Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities that features improved accessibility, family change rooms — with space for transgendered individuals, and space for CanAssist
  • CanAssist’s work with Vikes Athletics and Recreation to create accessible, inclusive athletic and recreational programming.

UVic’s CanAssist is dedicated to helping people with disabilities improve their quality of life, with a focus on promoting independence and inclusion.

Other notable names out of the 70 winners are Air Canada, CIBC, General Motors of Canada and the City of Vancouver.

The University of British Columbia, University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo are some of the other post-secondary institutions being recognized.

The annual editorial competition is in its 11th year.

Mediacorp also has a competition for Canada’s Top 100 Employers.
