After the initial impact, police say the southbound dump truck lost its steering, crossed into oncoming traffic and flipped over before hitting a hydro pole.
Authorities say the truck driver was not hurt but is shaken.
The crash closed the Old Island Highway at Heard Road until about 3:30 p.m. while investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash. The highway is now open.
The coroner was at the scene, along with highway crews that were diverting traffic.
