‘Ultra-affordable’ airline Lynx Air celebrates first flight to Victoria

Lynx Air — a new Canadian airline that describes itself as “ultra-affordable” — celebrated its first flight to and from Victoria International Airport Thursday, water cannon greeting and all.

Lynx Air’s fleet of brand new state-of-the-art Boeing 737 planes are 14 per cent more fuel-efficient than other aircraft of its time, cutting CO2 emissions and decreasing its carbon footprint.

“We’re really excited to be bringing our ultra-affordable fares to Victoria, we believe this is a great all-year destination,” says Merren McArthur, the President and CEO of Lynx Air.

The airline offers two services per week between Calgary and Victoria, increasing to three weekly trips by June 22, 2022.

With the addition of Victoria, the Lynx network flies to 10 Canadian cities, including Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg and all the way to Halifax. Linking families and friends after two long years of heavy travel restrictions.

“The fares have been traditionally high here in Canada so we think there’s a big opportunity to inspire more people to travel,” adds McArthur.

The Victoria International Airport says the arrival of the carrier is perfect.

“Our traffic is back close to 75 per cent of where it was pre-pandemic levels, when we look out for capacity this summer we see it as high as 2019 levels,” says Geoff Dickson, the President and CEO of the Victoria International Airport.

It’s just $49 to get from Victoria to Calgary, making a return trip come in just under the $100 mark, however, a quick search on the company’s website shows those prices are only available when booking a flight several months away.
