Two Victoria police officers were sent to hospital after responding to a call about a break-and-enter in the downtown area Friday morning.

One of the officers is still recovering in hospital.

Victoria police went to the 500-block of Johnson Street at around 7:15 a.m. following a report of a break-and-enter in progress. Officers then got a description of the suspect and one officer saw a man matching the description at Douglas Street and Pandora Avenue.

Police said after a brief conversation, the man assaulted one officer and tried to attack the other. The man fled and was stopped at Douglas and Yates streets. The man was Tasered but that did not subdue him, police said. After a brief struggle, the suspect was taken into custody. One of the officers was injured during the arrest.

According to police, the two officers suffered non-life threatening injuries and may be off work from some time. The suspect was not injured and is still in custody.

Two different officers were also assaulted Thursday while trying to arrest a man in the 800-block of Cormorant Street, VicPD said.

Police said they were called to the area after a report of two men fighting inside a business. When police arrived, one man was walking away from the business.

According to police, the suspect became “extremely violent” when they tried to arrest him. Two officers were injured during the arrest. With the help of additional officers, the man was taken into custody. Those two officers were able to return to work, police said.

A pair of glasses one of the officers was wearing was also broken during the arrest.

“It’s disappointing that our officers get hurt in the execution of their duties,” Victoria police spokesman Const. Matt Rutherford said.

“I think all the officers in this building realize its a risk that we face every day but two incidents in two days where our officers get hurt, it’s not acceptable.”
