A vehicle slid off Highway 19 and fell down an 80-foot embankment Monday, April 18, 2022.

Two people were taken to hospital for observation but were otherwise OK after their vehicle careened 80 feet down an embankment in Nanoose Bay Monday afternoon.

Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department was called to the single-vehicle collision just north of the Nanoose Bay Rest Area on Highway 19 before 3:30 p.m.

When they arrived, firefighters found both occupants had already gotten out of the vehicle and climbed back up to the highway.

Officials say it appears the vehicle stayed on its wheels as it left a northbound lane of the highway and slid down the embankment, coming to rest near train tracks.

Some congestion was expected on the route as it went down to a single lane northbound and first responders worked to clean up the scene.

The occupants of the vehicle were taken by paramedics to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for observation. They did not appear to be injured but were shaken by the ordeal, Nanoose Bay Fire Department said.
