NEW YORK — U.S. President Joe Biden is in lower Manhattan to mark the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Biden and a host of other cabinet members and dignitaries are at a morning ceremony to commemorate the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks.
Former president Barack Obama, former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer are also on hand.
A massive police presence has encircled the 9/11 memorial, a pair of deep, square fountains that mark the footprint of the toppled World Trade Center towers, engraved with the names of the victims.
An honour guard of police officers silently trooped in a tattered American flag as attendees held up photos of lost loved ones.
The ceremony was expected to last through the morning, with moments of silence to mark the moments the planes struck, the towers fell and United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in a field near Shanksville, Penn.
