Students at Belmont Secondary School celebrated the opening of a new turf field on Tuesday.

Thanks to a donation from the city of Langford valued at nearly $400,000, the turf field replaces the former grass one

“Our Board is very appreciative of the excellent partnership we have with Mayor Stew Young and Langford Council,” said SD62 Board Chair Ravi Parmar.

Belmont Principal Jim Lamond was joined by Mayor Young, Langford city councillors, and SD62 trustees for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

New turf would have carried a hefty price tag of as much as $1.5 million, instead one at Goudy Field that was due to be replaced was taken up and relocated to Belmont.

“With heavy rain and soggy weather through the fall and winter, our PHE classes and athletic teams have had difficulty using the grass field due to the conditions. The turf field will be a great addition to our school,” Lamond said in December.
