Students at Belmont Secondary are getting an early Christmas gift from the City of Langford, one that will allow athletics programs to use the school’s playing field year-round.

Thanks to a donation from the city valued at nearly $400,000, a turf field will replace the existing grass one and should be ready for use early in the new year

“This is a significant contribution to the school district and to our community,” says Ravi Parmar, SD62 Board Chair. “

New turf would carry a hefty price tag of as much as $1.5 million, instead the existing Goudy Field one will be relocated to Belmont.

“Adding a turf field at Belmont is great news for students and great news for Langford,” said Mayor Stew Young.

The City of Langford already budgeted for a replacement artificial turf surface for the Goudy Field to bring the facility up to standards set by international sporting bodies for rugby and soccer.

“This is a perfect time of year to have the turf installed,” says Jim Lamond, Belmont Secondary School Principal.

“With heavy rain and soggy weather through the fall and winter, our PHE classes and athletic teams have had difficulty using the grass field due to the conditions. The turf field will be a great addition to our school.”

Construction to ready the current field at Belmont is already underway.

Weather permitting, the new turf field will be installed over the winter and should be ready for use nearing the end of January.
