Malahat truck fire caught on camera Thursday morning.

UPDATE: At 10:46 a.m., DriveBC said the Trans-Canada Highway had fully reopened to traffic.

Original story follows:

Commuters on Vancouver Island’s Trans-Canada Highway were in for a slow go Thursday morning after a truck caught fire and closed southbound lanes.

Just after 6 a.m., Emcon Services said emergency crews were on scene approximately two kilometres south of Mill Bay Road, near Split Rock Lookout.

“Expect major delays,” Emcon warned Malahat drivers, noting northbound traffic was being detoured through the neighbouring pullout.

In a 9:45 a.m. update, DriveBC said the highway remains reduced to single-lane alternating traffic in both directions as it urged drivers to watch for traffic control crews.

One commuter captured the blaze on video showing the truck’s front end engulfed in flames, with several other trucks pulled over along the shoulder of the road.

There’s no word on the condition of the truck driver.

Check back for updates.
