A Tofino surfer has made history and she’s only 14-years-old.

Mathea Olin recently took home a gold in women’s longboard and a bronze in women’s shortboard in Pan American Surfing Championships in Peru from Dec. 5-9. This is the first time a Canadian surfer has won a medal in an international competition.

Team Canada finished fourth in the national standings at the Games. Olin and other Canadian surfers are all working toward their chance to appear in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Surfing will make its Olympic debut at the 2020 Games.

It is not known at this time how the surfers will qualify for the 2020 Olympics. However, it is expected the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima will be an important for the athletes wishing to appear to Olympics.
