Every week the MicCHEK Podcast sits down with a panel to discuss the best of the best on Vancouver Island.

This week Tofino’s Mayor Dan Law along with his wife, Mollie Law, and the owner and operator of Tuff City Radio in Tofino, Cam Dennison, joined the show to discuss their favourite options from their west coast homes.

They were asked to pick their favourite restaurant, beach, quick bite (ie. coffee shop) activity, and a miscellaneous suggestion about what makes Tofino great. Here’s what they selected:

RESTAURANT

Cam: The Schooner – 331 Campbell Street

“The food’s awesome. There’s a thing called the Halibut Bawden Bay. That is something I think about all the time. They have these blackened oysters and no one else does it.”

Mollie: Long Beach Lodge – 1441 Pacific Rim Highway

“Just for the view. You’re right on Cox Bay and it’s just really beautiful. It’s really fun to watch people and you can sit out on the patio too.”

Dan: SoBo – 311 Neill Street

“One of my favourite places to go. A couple of decades ago it was a food truck and it won a North American Food Award and the operator’s still going at it.”

QUICK BITE

Dan: Tofino Coffee Roasting Company – 605 Gibson Street

“Coffee’s fantastic and the scenery every morning is just stunning.”

Cam: Rhino Coffee Shop – 430 Campbell Street

“Great food, great people. I like the American Misto with almond milk. It’s right on the main road, you can’t miss it.”

Mollie: Harbourview Coffeehouse at Tofino Sea Kayaking – 320 Main Street

“You’re right on the harbour and it’s really quiet and you can watch the kayak tours come in and you can watch the harbour.”

BEACH

Mollie: Chesterman Beach

“You walk from one end to the other, it’s maybe five kilometres and it’s a good beach for the kids. Then you can go around Rosie Bay at the end and see all the starfish.”

Cam: Florencia Bay

“It’s secluded and beautiful, it’s a little bit more work then going to Chesterman but it’s well worth the effort. On any day, a rainy day I love it you can just see for miles. It’s one of my favourite places.”

Dan: Cox Bay

“The biggest waves I’ve ever ridden. Cox Bay is generally the bigger waves and a little gnarlier.”

ACTIVITY

Cam: Long Beach Golf Course

“It’s nine holes, it’s beautiful, it’s for the most part quite quiet. Being out in nature like that, being between the communities and seeing the mountains and hills, it’s a stunning place to be.”

Dan: Surfing

“Just get in the water, even if you get a wet suit and just get in the water you’re going to have some fun.”

Mollie: Swimming at the lake or in the rivers

“When we had that recent heat dome, the lake was great. On a hot day when you just want to swim and don’t want to get your wetsuit on.”

MISCELLANEOUS

Cam: Listen to Tuff City Radio

“Right when you begin your true journey into Tofino at the beginning of the road closure when you’re coming in you’ll be able to pick it up. 99.5 fm in Ucluelet and 90.1 fm in Tofino. Lots of where to go, what’s open when, transportation, tides, surf reports, weather, everything you need to know.”

Mollie: Meet a local

“What you want is an invite to someone’s house and then see what people are actually doing and how they’re spending their day.”

Dan: Embrace the people

“Get to know people, stop and chat. If I don’t know what to tell you to do, somebody’s going to tell you.”
