Three arrested after stolen SUV gets stuck in mud at Saanich park

Police say two men and woman were arrested Thursday afternoon after they fled from a stolen SUV that was stuck in the mud at James Houlihan Park off Ferndale Road.

At 1:15 p.m., police were called to the park when witnesses saw an SUV doing doughnuts in the field.

The SUV was stuck in the mud and police said the three people who were in the SUV fled on foot. A witness provided a description of the suspects. Police were able to find the group and arrest te suspects.

The SUV, a 1990 Toyota 4Runner, had been reported as stolen on Thursday morning from Victoria.

Police said the driver of the vehicle caused approximately $2,000 in damage to the field. The SUV has been towed away.

Police are recommending charges of mischief under $5,000 and possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Saanich police said they will work with Victoria police to investigate the theft of the SUV.

“We don’t know at this point why they decided to drive into the field, but the actions they took were certainly very foolish and reckless nature. We would like to thank the witnesses who provided detailed information that helped us locate the individuals responsible,” Saanich police said in a statement.
