This Week in History: The Victoria Saanich New Westminster Railway Company

CHEK

In late 2019, the BC Archives was offered a black metal trunk practically bursting with a jumble of papers.

Those papers were the record of the failed Victoria Saanich New Westminster Railway Company (V.S. & NW).

BC Archives archivist Sally Butterfield explains what will happen to these documents.

“We have to go through each item and figure out ‘What is this? How does it fit in with the story of the company?’ We have to research the company. But before we can do that a paper conservator is going to have to go through the whole lot and clean everything before we can get our hands on it.”

Processing and cataloguing all these papers will take time, but one day, the records of the failed Victoria Saanich New Westminster Railway Company will be available to view at the BC Archives.

Veronica Cooper takes a sneak peek at some of those papers on This Week in History.
