Much of Vancouver Island woke up to thick patches of fog Monday morning, but it had cleared by the afternoon in some areas.

Environment Canada issued a fog advisory for west Vancouver Island Sunday night, which remains in place.

The weather agency says extensive fog is providing near zero visibility for much of the west region of the Island, but should improve as it retreats to the coast.

Environment Canada and police have advised drivers to turn on your lights when on the road if visibility becomes difficult because of fog and to maintain a safe following distance.
