Oak Bay Police says a 17-year-old driver who was pulled over for doing more than double the speed limit also had a fake driver’s licence.
On the evening of April 3, police were conducting speed checks on Beach Drive near Newport Avenue which has a 40 kilometre per hour speed limit.
Two teens were caught while the police agency was conducting speed checks.
The second was caught driving 83 km/h. Police pulled over the 17-year-old teen boy.
When he pulled out his B.C. driver’s licence, the officer noticed a second driver’s licence, so the officer asked to see it.
The teen then pulled out an Alberta licence with a different date of birth, but his likeness. The teen told police it was a fake that he used to enter a bar.
Police seized the licence, issued a violation ticket for excessive speed and warned about the forged document. The vehicle he was driving was towed and impounded for seven days.
In an earlier traffic stop, the driver was also a 17-year-old teen boy.
In this stop the teen was driving 89 km/h.
The teen was also issued a ticket for excessive speed, and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.
In both of these incidents the teens’ parents came and picked up their sons.
The next day, police were at the same intersection conducting speed checks, where a third teen was caught speeding.
A 19-year-old woman was caught driving 85 km/h.
She was also given a ticket for excessive speed, and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.
The ticket amount for excessive speed is $368.
According to ICBC, on average 80 people die every year in speed-related crashes.
The fine for speeding ranges from $138 to $483.
