No official word from police after 9-hour standoff in Courtenay ends with one in custody

RCMP have not provided any information on what led to a nine-hour standoff at a Courtenay on Sunday home that landed one man in custody.

Dozens of police officers and Emergency Response Team (ERT) members were in a standoff early afternoon on Sunday at a residence on Morello Place, where a man barricaded himself.

Paramedics from BC Emergency Health Services and crews from Courtenay Fire Department also attended the scene.

Nearby residents say the man in his 40s has caused several disturbances in the area for months.

“Always screaming and saying ‘gonna kill the pigs and kill the people on Morello,” said one neighbour who did not want to be identified.

The neighbour says the suspect had thrown firecrackers and jumped in front of cars. Police had attended the home prior, according to the neighbour.

“They came out once earlier in the year, they came out, and they arrested him,” they said.

A K-9 unit, drone, and multiple cans of tear gas were used to try and get the man to surrender.

Later in the evening, officers forced their way into the home, but it wouldn’t be until sometime around 11 p.m. that ERT placed the man under custody.

RCMP provided information on the incident on April 9. You can read the update here.
