Police investigate after a stabbing at Nanaimo’s waterfront walkway on March 29, 2019.

A teenage boy has been charged with attempted murder two days after a 30-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times while walking along Nanaimo’s Harbourfront walkway.

Crown prosecutor Leanne Mascolo confirmed the charge after the suspect appeared in court on March 29.

The 17-year-old suspect is accused of stabbing a woman multiple times near Maffeo Sutton Park, close to the local crab dock, at around 10:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Five bystanders helped the woman and restrained the teenage boy until police arrived. Police said if the bystanders had not intervened, the woman may not have survived.

The woman was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was listed in stable condition on Friday.

Police called the attack random and said no relationship has been established between the victim and the suspect.

The boy, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, remains in custody until his next court appearance on April 11.
