Investigators are working to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a home in Nanaimo on Tuesday night.
Extension Volunteer Fire Department was called to a property in the 2100 block of Nanaimo River Road just before 10 p.m. by a neighbour who heard an explosion and saw a house engulfed in flames. The house was fully engulfed by flames by the time fire crews arrived.
RCMP said the fire was contained to the property and is considered suspicious in nature. Investigators have determined no one was at home during the fire.
The house is being secured by Nanaimo RCMP who are requesting a search warrant to reenter the home so they can determine the cause of the blaze. Police said a man is believed to have been residing in the home but his whereabouts are not known to police at this time.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
