Man arrested with replica firearm after Victoria police respond to gun call

Victoria police took a man into custody on Wednesday afternoon after responding to reports of a man with a handgun.

Officers were called to the area of Fort and Douglas Streets after a concerned passerby saw a man pass what looked like a handgun to another man.

The area was secured and officers approached the suspect who was taken into custody.

The man then told officers that he had a replica firearm in his backpack.

The man, who is well-known to police, is under court-ordered conditions which include prohibitions for possessing firearms or items which resemble firearms.

Charges for breach of these conditions are being considered.
