Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of wet snow with light accumulations for most of Vancouver Island on Saturday morning.

The special weather statement applies to Greater Victoria, Goldstream to Mill Bay, Qualicum Beach, Nanaimo to the Cowichan Valley, southern sections of Inland Vancouver Island.

The weather agency says anywhere from 2 to 4 cm of snow can be expected over higher terrain and that motorists should be prepared for slippery road conditions, especially across Malahat, throughout Saturday morning.

“A low-pressure system brushing the south coast brings wet snow to parts of Vancouver Island from Nanaimo to Victoria Harbour,” the weather agency says in a statement on its website.

Meanwhile, Emcon Services’s South Island Division, the highway maintenance contractor for southern Vancouver Island, said on social media Saturday morning that light snow is accumulating along the Malahat highway and Highway 18 between Lake Cowichan and Duncan.
