Southern resident killer whales were seen near Pender Island on Tuesday.

Whale watcher Jackie Cowan took photos of the orcas in Bedwell Harbour at around 4 p.m. The photos show a mother, her calf and other members of the L-pod. Cowan said the mother is L-103, Lapsis, and the calf is L-123, known as Lazuli.

There has been some concern raised about southern residents as they had not been seen in the waters off Vancouver Island for some time. Tuesday’s sighting has been met with relief. There is believed to be 76 southern residents left.
