Scott Stinson, the superintendent of the Sooke School District (SD 62) has announced he will retire at the end of this calendar year.

Stinson has served as the district’s superintendent since 2018.

“It has been an honour to spend the last several years of my career serving the students, staff and families of the Sooke School District,” said Stinson in a news release.

“I am extremely proud of what we have been able to accomplish together, and I will spend the next months ensuring that the District continues on a positive trajectory towards a path of equity, inclusion and progress for everyone.”

This will be the end of Stinson’s 37-year career in education, which began in Burns Lake. He then moved to Greater Victoria and taught at elementary, middle, and secondary levels. He also held administrative positions like district curriculum coordinator, vice principal, principal, and district principal. Before being hired as superintendent, Stinson was working as the associate superintendent for the Saanich School District (SD 63).

Amanda Dowhy, SD 62’s interim board chair, says the district is grateful for the time Stinson worked there.

“Scott has led with integrity and kindness, he’s been a champion for the Sooke School District, and we are grateful for the time he has spent with us,” Dowhy said in a news release.

“As we begin the process of searching for a new Superintendent, we will be looking for a candidate who will  continue to advance the District’s organizational maturity and will work to ensure our school  communities are engaging, innovative and inclusive.”

The school board will now work to hire a new superintendent, whose role will start on Jan. 1, 2024.

In retirement, Stinson says he is looking forward to spending time with his family, and enjoying activities like tennis, golf, and surfing.
