Sooke RCMP is investigating after a driver was killed in a single-vehicle crash along West Coast Road on Tuesday.

In a release posted on Wednesday, police say the single-vehicle crash took place at approximately 1:30 p.m. on the afternoon of April 13.

Frontline officers responded to the scene of the crash, located in the 7500-block of West Coast Road, and found a grey Nissan SUV had collided with a tree.

Police believe that the vehicle was travelling westbound when it crossed the centre line into an opposing lane of traffic. The vehicle proceeded to leave the roadway and continue down a small embankment before colliding with the tree, according to the RCMP release.

Witnesses to the collision immediately attempted lifesaving efforts to the man until they were relieved by first responders says Sooke RCMP Sergeant Kevin Shaw I’m very grateful for the contributions and lifesaving efforts of all involved, witnesses and first responders.

BC Emergency Health Services also were on the scene and administered first aid to the driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Despite resuscitation efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A collision analyst is working alongside the Sooke RCMP in determining the cause of the collision.

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating to determine how, where, when and by what means the driver came to his death.

“Due to the privacy of the deceased, neither organization will be releasing or confirming identity,” reads the release.

Anyone who witnessed the single-vehicle crash or witnessed the driving behaviour of this vehicle prior to the collision, and has yet to speak with Sooke RCMP, is being asked to call 250-642-5241.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
