The Canadian Forces Snowbirds announced on social media that they will be in Comox from May 4 until May 26 for spring training as they prepare for their 50th season of air shows.

The Snowbirds are returning to Vancouver Island for the first time since a fatal crash last summer.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds announced on social media that they will be in Comox from May 4 until May 26 for spring training as they prepare for their 50th season of air shows.

“Look up and be sure to tag us in your pictures and videos,” the Snowbirds wrote on Twitter.

Snowbirds’ 2021 schedule is set to kick off at an undetermined location on June 5 but could change due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are looking forward to celebrating our 50th season with Canadians in 2021. We are going to ensure that we follow recommended health measures in order to see our fans again in a safe environment this season,” Lt.-Cnl. Denis Bandet of 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, said in a press release.

The popular air demonstration squadron is scheduled to perform in a handful of communities in Canada and the United States throughout the summer months, including Boundary Bay and White Rock in July as well as San Francisco and Huntington Beach, Calif. in October.

As of April 25, no Vancouver Island communities have been announced as part of the Snowbirds schedule.

Last May, Snowbirds Capt. Jennifer Casey, a public affairs officer and former Royal Roads University student, was killed when the Tutor jet she was travelling in crashed after striking a bird during departure from an airport in Kamloops.

Casey died after she attempted to eject from the aircraft while Capt. Richard MacDougall, who was piloting the aircraft, survived the crash.

The Tutor jet was a part of the Canadian Air Force’s Snowbirds aerobatics team on their way to Comox as part of Operation Inspiration, a cross-country fly-over to raise people’s spirits in this pandemic.

The Snowbirds have been performing since 1971.
