Snow storm knocks out power for hundreds of Vancouver Island residents

As maintenance crews work around the clock the clear snow from major highways and roads on Vancouver Island, hundreds of residents are in the dark.

According to the BC Hydro Outage Map, 770 South Island residents and approximately 120 North Island customers are without power.

The bulk of those live in Shirley and Jordan River, where nearly 500 customers are left in the dark due to a tree that has fallen down across power lines. Crews are on-site and BC Hydro expects power to be restored at around 4:30 p.m.

Approximately 100 Tofino residents are waiting for power to be restored in the 1300-block of Chesterman Beach Road. Crews are on-site and the cause is being investigated.

A fire in Sooke has left approximately 160 customers are without power. Crews are on-site, the area affected is south of West Coast Road, north of Austins Place and west of Whiffin Spit Road.

Around 80 East Sooke residents are also waiting for electricity after a downed power line. The area affected is north of Park Heights Drive and south-west of Sooke Road. As of 1 p.m on Saturday, no crew has been assigned as of yet.
