Nanaimo RCMP says a six-year-old child was taken to hospital with non-life threatening after being struck by a vehicle near Pleasant Valley Elementary School Wednesday afternoon.

Police say it happened on Metral Drive at Dunbar Road when the child got out of a family vehicle and ran into the roadway and was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

The collision happened around 2:45 p.m.

Investigators have ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors, and are looking at the vehicle’s speed, the weather at the time of the incident and the actions of the child.

RCMP says the driver involved stayed at the scene and the investigation continues.
