The victim of a Victoria homicide is being remembered by family and friends as a compassionate artist who was a “gentle genius.”

Jeremy Gordaneer was found by police in the 1000-block of Carberry Gardens early Tuesday morning in life-threatening condition.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene and administered first aid but Gordaneer died at the scene.

The Vancouver Island Major Crimes Unit has taken over the case but investigators have not said what kind of weapon was used and have not identified a suspect.

A resident in the neighborhood told CHEK News he happened to be up early when he heard an unusual sound.

“At about 4:20 a.m., I heard ‘pop pop’ and that was it. Nothing further,” said Don McConaghy. “Very odd sound … Not a bang, just ‘pop pop’.”

Gordaneer was an artist in resident at Camosun College in 2016 and had a wry sense of humour and an ability to put people at ease, his wife Thea Patterson said in a Facebook post.

“He is…simply one of the very best ones. I have never felt so loved, so seen, so safe,” wrote Patterson.

She said he’ll be remembered for his wry sense of humour and an ability to put people at ease.

Investigators are currently seeking anyone who may have information about the incident, including dashcam or video footage of the area of the 1000-block of Carberry Gardens from 6 p.m. on the night of Aug. 30 to 6 a.m. Aug. 31.

VicPD confirmed this is the second homicide investigation of the year.

Anyone with information about is being asked to call the VIIMCU Information Line at 250-380-6211.
