Sewage backup temporarily shuts down surgeries at Victoria General Hospital

Surgeries were placed on hold for two hours Wednesday following a sewage backup at the Victoria General Hospital.

The plumbing issue happened at 10:30 a.m. and scheduled surgeries were stopped for two hours while the situation was “was investigated and controlled.”

Two of the ten surgical rooms were impacted by the sewage and had to be fully clean. They remained closed until Thursday morning. According to Island Health, no equipment was damaged.

Island Health says it apologizes to patients who were affected by the incident and thank them for their understanding. Two surgeries are being rescheduled.

“We appreciate how quickly our staff responded and the steps taken to mitigate the impact to patients,” Island Health said in a statement.

Island Health said it suspects the blockage was caused by a foreign object.
