Bruce Avenue between Fourth Street and Pine Street in Nanaimo will be closed for utility and street upgrades, starting Tuesday.

Utility and street upgrades will mean part of Bruce Avenue in Nanaimo will be closed until the fall.

Starting Tuesday, Bruce Avenue will be closed between Pine Street and Fourth Street for planned construction and will remain in place work is completed.

The city says construction work will include water main, sanitary and storm sewage upgrades.

New concrete curbs and sidewalks will be put in place on the west side of Bruce Avenue and there will be safety upgrades at the intersection of Bruce and Fourth.

The city says there will be new LED street lighting and new on-street bike lanes that will connect with already completed sections of Harewood bikeway.

Detours at Pine and Fourth streets will be set up to direct traffic around the work zone.

The intersection of Fourth, Pine and Albert Streets has been changed to a four-way stop.

The city says the work will improve transportation for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and transit users and asks residents to use caution when travelling around the project.
