Nanaimo RCMP say the 51-year-old reported missing on Tuesday afternoon has been found safe in Saskatchewan.

On Wednesday morning, search crews were looking for the missing man around the Living Forest Campground on Maki Road. Cortney Latoski has multiple sclerosis and is an avid hiker. His family became concerned when he didn’t return home by 3 p.m. He was last seen on Tuesday morning at Southgate Mall.

“We had over 30 members of Nanaimo Search and Rescue search last night until three last night in the pouring rain. Today we had teams coming from Ladysmith, Arrowsmith and Comox,” said Eugene Touchette, a Nanaimo Search Manager.

Police located the missing man in Saskatchewan early Wednesday afternoon. It turns out his phone was dead when he decided to take a flight to his home province.

“It’s a great outcome,” said Touchette.

“It puts a smile on everyone’s face. It’s rewarding to give that great information to the family.”

Search and rescue says this underscores the need to tell one’s family when you’re leaving on a short hike or a long flight because no one wants unnecessary energy spent on a search.
